Virginia vs Maryland Trends & History
This will be the first meeting between the two teams since 2013 when the Terrapins secured a 27-26 victory over the Cavaliers at College Park. Virginia is 6-2 ATS in their last eight games against Maryland, although the Terrapins lead the all-time series 44-32.
Some key betting trends to note are that the Terrapins are 7-2 in their past nine home games, while the Cavaliers are 1-5 in their last six away games. When it comes to the over/under, the total has gone UNDER in five of Virginia’s last five games against an opponent in the Big Ten conference.
The college football public betting splits show that Maryland at -14.5 was getting 61% of the ATS money with just 47% of bets, indicating some potential sharp action. Virgina is seeing 18% of the moneyline handle, however, and the “over” is getting 72% of the o/u handle.
Cavaliers Off to 0-2 Start
The Virginia Cavaliers have had a rough start to their season, losing each of their first two games of the 2023 campaign. The Cavaliers lost 49-13 to Tennessee in Week 1 before losing 36-35 to JMU in their home opener last weekend.
Although Virginia is winless in their opening two contests, the team did cover the spread against the Dukes in Week 2. The Cavaliers were 6.5-point underdogs and came one point away from pulling the upset. Both teams had exactly 395 yards in the contest.
For the Cavaliers, quarterback Anthony Colandrea has thrown for 389 yards so far this season, while running back Perris Jones leads the team in rushing with 50 yards and one touchdown. Wide receiver Malik Washington has been the top receiver, accumulating 148 receiving yards and one TD.
Defensively, the Cavaliers have major defensive issues that could lead them to not exceed their college football win total. The Cavaliers are allowing 447 yards per game so far, which is last in the ACC. Their secondary has at least been better than their rush defense, which is ideal when facing a pass-first offense like Maryland’s.

Terrapins Undefeated Yet Unimpressive
Maryland enters Friday Night College Football boasting a 2-0 record, but they haven’t looked overly impressive. The Terrapins secured a comfortable victory against Towson (38-6) in Week 1 but followed up with a closer 38-20 win over Charlotte last weekend.
Maryland was a heavy favorite in both contests and failed to cover the spread in each instance. Offensively, the team has at least looked promising, with senior QB Taulia Tagovailoa throwing for 547 yards and four touchdowns, and RB Roman Hemby rushing for 220 yards.

Defensively, the Terrapins have looked average, allowing 295 yards and 13 points per game against two lower-class opponents. The big concern is the rush defense, which is already allowing 136.5 yards per contest after finishing In the bottom half of the Big Ten in that category last season.
Virginia vs Maryland Prediction
This is a tough betting spot for the Cavaliers following their emotional home opener. The team honored three fallen teammates before the loss, which could lead to some emotional exhaustion as they travel to College Park to face the Terrapins.
Virginia’s strength lies in their passing game, with Colandrea showing promise. However, they need to improve their rushing attack and overall offensive production to compete with stronger teams like Maryland. Their defense has also been inconsistent, which could be a significant factor in this matchup.
Albeit against weak competition, Maryland’s secondary looks vastly improved from one season ago. Offensively, the team is loaded and should have no issues scoring on the Cavaliers like they’ve done to other susceptible defenses in recent matchups.
For our Virginia vs Maryland prediction, we’re going to take the Terrapins to cover the first-half spread of -9.5 points as we project them to be up by double-digits at the half. We also like the prop of Tagovaiola over 1.5 passing TDs, as he’s hit that number in seven of nine career non-conference games.
Picks:
Maryland First-Half Spread -9.5 (-110)Taulia Tagovailoa Over 1.5 Passing Touchdowns (-165)
